How to tackle the GW29 Syndrome?
Everything was going great, your team was starting to
look like it could win the Champions League, you finally
had a plan and then you face the nightmare of game-
week 29. So if you are spending every moment of the
day wondering how to solve this problem we are going to
give you the information you need to make the right
decisions.
The key to game-week 29 is the fact that currently only
12 teams will be playing and this could be reduced
further if Hull City beat Brighton and Hove Albion in their
fourth round replay. If that isn’t enough to deal with in
game-week 28 four teams will also not be playing due to
the League Cup final between Manchester City and
Sunderland.
It is around this time of the season when prior planning
pays off and the people rushing in buying the current hot
player is not always the best option as potentially one
game-week or even two (Yaya Toure/Andy Johnson) on
the bench could leave your team low on point scoring
potential. Fielding 11 players in game-week 29 is most
likely going to score you more points than if you field
so you want to make sure you field as many as you can.
So here it is clear and simple.
In game-week 28 the teams not playing are:
Manchester City, Sunderland, Manchester United and West Brom
In game-week 29 the teams not playing are:
Manchester City, Sunderland, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle and Swansea
Remember Hull and West Ham will also not play if Hull wins their FA cup fixture.
That leaves the remaining game-week 29 fixtures as:
West Brom vs Man Utd
Cardiff vs Fulham
Crystal Palace vs Southampton
Norwich vs Stoke
West Ham vs Hull (if Hull lose)
Chelsea vs Tottenham
What to do?
You are left with 3 transfers without taking a points hit or if you saved for a rainy day 4 transfers to
use before game-week 29. The first and somewhat obvious thing to do is start to ditch your City
and Sunderland players over the next few game-weeks remembering that with game-week 27
Sunderland have Arsenal away and City will be playing Stoke at home and we all know what that
means (GOALS!!!). Make sure you are aware of the fixture list and put off bringing in players who will be missing game-week 29 however you may choose to make exceptions for on form players or due to price rises(Sturridge is currently the second most transfer in player this week with over 60,000 people seeing him as a must have even with a blank game-week on the horizon).
Look at your team and work out how many players you will be able to field (mine is currently 4 if
Hull wins) and a lot will be in similar positions. Make some decisions about the players you don’t
mind ditching and the players you want to hold onto. Don’t forget they will all be playing the week
afterwards and when they score a hat-trick in game-week 30 you will kick yourself. Use the transfer
page and make the 3/4 transfers and see how your team will look, have the players in mind who you
are going to bring in each week and keep an eye on injuries and suspensions.
The teams who you might want to consider for your game-week 29 cover are:
Chelsea
Currently the only top four team with a match that week. Facing Everton (h), Fulham (a)
and then Tottenham (h) in their next three fixtures all of which Jose will be expecting to
wimn.
Norwich
Norwich have not had the most successful campaign this year but they have kept a clean sheet
in their past three home matches. They face Tottenham (h), Aston Villa (a) and with Stoke (h)
arriving in game-week 29 cheap defenders might be a sensible option.
Tottenham. They face Norwich (a), Cardiff (h) and then arrive at Chelsea (a) in game-week 29 and with them being currently fifth they need to continue picking up results, their inform point scorer Adebayor
picking up three goals and an assist in the past 2 game-weeks.
The Punt: If you fancy taking a somewhat riskier route look to Cardiff City.
Finally, the most important thing about blank game-weeks is the bonanza of double game-weeks that is sure to follow. The only one we know of is game-week 31 when we have the pleasure of a Manchester derby with both of them playing twice. But more will be approaching soon so keep watching out for when these games get rearranged and if you have that illusive wildcard you might want to hold on and cash in.
